It's hard to get a ride back to the parking lot at Sliding Sands after topping out at Switchbacks. People just don't want to stop on their way up the epic windy road!
Great photo! Can I request a blog post for when you get home? Okay, I've just read that Haines' total snowfall for the year was 28 feet! How do you people handle the logistics of this? Do you shovel your driveways daily? And... after a while, where do you put all of it? The berms on either side of my walkways are already mid-thigh-high; don't you just run out of places to put snow? And... do you ever open your door in the morning and just find a wall of white? :D
I'll take update on snow mountains when I get there... another place to see photos is at Heather Lende's blog, she's got some great shots. Google her name, she's easy to find.
Once you run out of places to throw by hand, it helps to have a friend with a backhoe to push the mountains over. I also climb my berms and shovel the tops off to make another tier for tossing.
I haven't woken up to a wall of snow at my place but I've seen where people's roofs have slid and made a wall.
When the plow trucks can't shove the big berms over any further, the road crews will use a grader with a side blade to knock the tops off of those. When those berms are too high and too stiff, they'll actually push the big plow trucks sideways!
